RTOGuard vs turning off COD

Switching off Cash on Delivery stops RTO and also stops the buyers who only order on COD. Here is the trade, side by side.

When RTO gets painful, the first idea is usually "switch off Cash on Delivery". It does stop RTO. It also stops a large share of orders, because many Indian buyers will only order on COD, especially first-time buyers and buyers outside metros. This page compares the two routes.

Our honest take

If less than about a tenth of your orders are COD, turning it off can be the simplest fix. For most Indian D2C stores COD is a much bigger share than that, and switching it off trades a known RTO cost for a larger, invisible cost: orders that never happen.

Worked example (illustrative): a store gets 100 COD orders a month at ₹2,100 each and 22 come back. Turning off COD saves the 22 return charges but can lose a large part of the other 78 orders. Checking the risky orders first keeps the 78 and stops most of the 22 before they ship.

A middle path many stores use: keep COD on, confirm the risky orders, and offer a small prepaid discount at checkout. RTOGuard supports the first two today; prepaid nudges are on the roadmap.

Questions people ask

Does turning off COD stop RTO completely?

It stops COD RTO, because there are no COD parcels to refuse. Prepaid orders can still be returned after delivery, which is a return, not an RTO.

How much of Indian D2C ordering is COD?

It varies a lot by category, price and city. Many stores see COD as the majority of orders outside metros. Check your own Shopify order data for the last 90 days before deciding; it is the only number that matters for your store.

Can I turn off COD only for some pin codes?

Shopify does not do this natively, but RTOGuard's RTO breakdown gives you a pin-code exclusion list (CSV) you can use in your Meta ads and in COD-restriction apps, so you stop advertising and shipping COD to the pin codes that return the most.

Does RTOGuard cancel risky COD orders by itself?

No. RTOGuard scores and tags the order and puts risky ones on a Call list. Your team confirms and decides. Test mode lets you watch for a while before anything changes.
